Introduction

1. This book, together with “New Yonsei Korean Language Vocabulary & Grammar 2” and “New Yonsei Korean Language Listening & Reading 2,” is for beginner level Korean language learners. It has been compiled so that students can practice speaking and writing the sentence structure and vocabulary they’ve learned in “New Yonsei Korean Language Vocabulary & Grammar 2.”

2. This book focuses on developing students’ ability to express themselves so that beginner-level Korean language learners can ultimately speak and write Korean.

3. This book consists of 20 lessons and each lesson is made up of two sections, totaling 40 sections in all. For every two lessons, there is a separate review section, and there are a total of 10 review sections in the book. Each section consists of enough material for a 50-minute class, and the entire book contains 50 sections total. And for every two lessons, there is a segment that introduces Korean culture.

4. Each section of the book consists of a title, learning objectives, a “Let’s Prepare” segment, “Let’s Discuss” segment, and “Let’s Write” segment. The review section consists of three assignments so that students can review the topic, function, vocabulary and grammar from the previous two lessons.

5. The title of each lesson in this book is the same as the lesson titles of “New Yonsei Korean Language Vocabulary & Grammar 2.” The title of each section is the representative sentence from the dialogue so that learners can clearly understand the learning objective of the section.

6. The learning objective is expressed as, “can speak about –,” “can explain –,” and “can introduce—” in order to help learners understand the function of each of the expressions.

7. The “Let’s Prepare” segment is essentially an introduction to the section. The illustration, which serves as an example to help learners understand the learning objective, is followed by two questions that aim to induce learners to predict the specific content that the section will consist of. One of the questions refers to the illustration and the other question refers to the personal experience of the learner that is related to the theme of the section.

8. “Let’s Discuss” is formatted so that learners can practice speaking by applying the contents of what they have learned in “New Yonsei Korean Language Vocabulary & Grammar 2.” The authors tried to incorporate various situations so that beginner level Korean language learners can learn to communicate in specific real-life situations. Useful expressions are also introduced in each of the dialogues in order to help learners improve their ability to communicate. Moreover, each exercise consists of an “Example” section that shows the structure of the entire dialogue with the aim of furthering the understanding of learners.

9. “Let’s Write” is comprised of exercises that integrate writing with speaking activities through instructions such as “Write and present your ideas” and “Discuss and write down the contents of your discussion.” In order to help learners familiarize themselves with the writing structure that corresponds to the function and format of the text, an example of the text is also included. For the “Write & Present” exercises, we included useful expressions to use when making a presentation to help learners practice speaking in formal situations. A “Model Answer” segment is also provided so that learners can refer to the recommended writing structure.

10. The “Review Section” consists of three exercises. It aims to help learners practice their written and spoken discourse using the vocabulary, grammar, and theme that they learned in the preceding two sections.

11. “Culture” introduces Korean culture, as well as Korean expressions that learners can use.

12. Each of the exercises consist of level-based activities so that Korean language learners can express themselves in various ways according to their Korean language ability. “Let’s Discuss” is formatted so that learners can begin with forming a conversation within the context of a given situation, and then proceeds to introduce a higher level of speech, where learners can engage in dialogue within the context of their own personal situations. “Let’s Write” begins with the outlining stage and follows a logical, step-by-step process to help learners with writing composition.

13. New vocabulary can be found at the bottom of the page for each relevant exercise. In addition, an Appendix of all of the new vocabulary words and the section in which they were used is included in the book to help learners with their Korean language studies.
